One of the most common questions we hear from families is what if their kids won’t “behave” during family portraits? You are far from alone in wondering this. You are bringing your family to a studio in hopes of capturing the perfect family portrait that you can happily display on the walls of your home. That’s a lot of pressure! We’ll share some thoughts on how your kids will behave during the session and how to head into your session fully relaxed.
How to Prepare for Your Family Portrait Session
The best way to head into your family portrait session fully relaxed is by preparing accordingly before the session, and then once you arrive, it’s time to let go and go with the flow.
First, you’ll want to choose a time and date that works best for your family. We know your growing family is very busy, but try to choose a day that doesn’t have any other commitments on the same day. If you can’t find a day like that, try to schedule your session with nothing right after. That way, you’re not feeling rushed or stressed.
Second, give yourself plenty of time to prepare yourself and your family for the session. Again, we don’t want you to feel rushed or stressed.
Then, we offer our clients wardrobe guidance to make choosing outfits even easier. You can look at our resource here on what to wear for spring portraits as well as what to wear for summer portraits here.
Finally, our last tip on preparing for your session is to make sure that tummies are full before you come to the studio. Not necessarily stuffed, but full so that no one is hungry during the session.
What Happens if Your Child Doesn’t Behave During Family Portraits
So, you’ve done everything to prepare for the session and you’re hoping for the best. What happens if your child isn’t cooperating during the session? As a Certified Professional Photographer and parents ourselves, we want to assure you that we are fully prepared to help every child have fun and pose for the portraits.
We start by making sure your children feel comfortable in the studio by talking with them and helping them warm up to the camera. Usually, this is all children need to feel comfortable and ready for their close-up.
We’re not above a little bribing if that’s what it takes! If needed, we have a prize box they can choose from for doing well for the portraits. That will usually do the trick! The best part is when the children ask when they can come back.
